The African Union (AUA) is planning to have its own new drug, the anti-impotence drug Viagra, on display at itsagra’s sale in South Africa last month.
It is being presented to the health regulator as a medicine that will be used to treat male sexual dysfunction, the South African government said on Tuesday.
The drug was introduced last week, which is the latest in a series of drug launches aimed at helping men with the condition.
AUA health chief, Dr Yala Bury, said a new drug for erectile dysfunction was expected to be on sale in the country this year.
“This will be an important drug for men in the South African health system,” Bury said in an interview with a radio programme that aired on radio station Be transmitter in Pretoria.
It is hoped it will also help men with high blood pressure to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
“Viagra has already been approved for use in men with erectile dysfunction,” Bury said.
The drug was developed to treat impotence, a condition in which men cannot achieve and keep a hard, erect penis. The drug’s side-effect profile can include erections that last for more than four hours.
The medicine has been available in South Africa for several years, and it will be launched this fall, he said.
Bury said the new drug was developed as an anti-impotence drug with the same active ingredients as Viagra but with fewer side-effects.
He added that it would be introduced in a month, after which it would be launched in March.
AUA health chief, Dr Nkosi Nkosi, said the company was working on a drug that would be developed in the coming years.
“We are hoping to get the drug on the market as soon as we can in a few months,” he said.
The drug was first approved in the African Union in 1991 and became available to South Africans by 2000.
